The Davis-Monthan Family's Guide to a Stress-Free PCS Cleanout

Anyone who has PCSed knows the pattern. The pack out goes fine for two days, then the movers start pointing at things they will not take, and suddenly you are standing in an empty house with a garage full of paint cans, a grill, a dead lawnmower, and three pieces of furniture that did not make the cut. Report date does not move. The house has to be clear.

What the movers will not take

• Hazardous materials: paint, propane tanks, motor oil, pool chemicals, aerosols, batteries
• Anything with fuel in it: mowers, generators, string trimmers, pressure washers
• Open food, cleaning supplies, and most liquids
• Items they judge as damaged or unsanitary, which frequently includes mattresses and outdoor furniture
• Anything over your weight allowance, which is the one that ruins the budget

The weight allowance is worth its own attention. Hauling low value heavy items across the country and paying overage is a bad trade. Particle board furniture, old grills, and treadmills are the classic examples. It is almost always cheaper to remove them here and replace them there.

A timeline that holds

• Sixty days out: walk the garage, shed, and attic. Decide what is not making the move.
• Thirty days out: schedule the junk removal for the day after your pack out, not the same day.
• Two weeks out: clear hazardous materials, since those cannot ride in a moving truck at all.
• Pack out day: set aside anything the movers reject in one staging area, usually the garage.
• Day after pack out: crew clears the staging area and the house is ready for clearing inspection.

Booking the haul for the day after pack out is the piece most families skip. Movers reject things unpredictably. If you book the cleanout before you know what got rejected, you are guessing at the volume.

Base access matters more than it sounds

A lot of haulers cannot get onto Davis-Monthan, which means either you shuttle everything off base yourself or you spend an afternoon coordinating an escort.
